Loch Ness is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK. Drumnadrochit, situated on the western side of the loch, is a perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside, visiting a host of tourist attractions or seeing the sights of Inverness. The Loch Ness area boasts a great range of activities and attractions and is an ideal starting point for a trip to the Isle of Skye and the scenic west coast ...
Loch Ness has something for everyone.
Sporting enthusiasts can choose from activities such as fishing for trout, salmon or pike, sailing or canoeing on Loch Ness, mountain biking, wind-surfing, paragliding, ski-ing on the Nevis range, golf, horse riding or hill walking. Drumnadrochit is the perfect place to stay for walkers and ramblers of all ages. There are many signposted walks around the village, more demanding hill walks and, for the more adventurous, the Great Glen Way.
Urquhart Castle
The Great Glen Way is a challenging long-distance walk following the entire length of the Great Glen from Fort William in the south west to Inverness in the north east. The walk is 73 miles (117 km) long through some of Scotland's most impressive scenery and passes through the village of Drumnadrochit some 14 miles south of Inverness. The route is suitable for all levels of walker being mostly low-level and following woodland tracks and tow-paths along the Caledonian Canal. Certain sections are more challenging, in particular just to the north of Fort Augustus and at Invermoriston, and of course more experienced walkers may wish to conquer a Munro (Scottish mountain over 3000 ft/914m in height) or Corbett (2500-3000 ft/762-914m) by taking a minor diversion along the way. The route can be easily walked in 5 or 6 days, staying at various locations on the way. We recommend booking your accommodation in advance during the height of the season. The Great Glen Way can be walked in either direction although those heading north should benefit from having the prevailing wind behind them.
Corrimony Chambered Cairn
History lovers will find plenty to interest them in and around Drumnadrochit. Once one of Scotland's largest castles, Urquhart Castle by the side of Loch Ness and only 2 miles from the village, is an impressive example of a medieval stronghold. It is unclear exactly when the castle was built but evidence exists of a settlement on the site in the 1200s. Having witnessed centuries of conflict, the castle is today in ruins but still affords spectacular views over Loch Ness.
On a somewhat lesser scale the Corrimony chambered cairn is a must-see for anyone with megalithic interests visiting Drumndrochit. The cairn is situated approximately eight miles from the village on the A831. Visitors with an interest in researching their family history may find clues and information in the local parish churches.
